'Protectoe'' the cricket bat toe guard was devised some twelve years ago by David Pratt of Blackburn, Lancashire, as an answer to damage caused to the most vulnerable part of the cricket bat - the toe! Water damage, scuffing due to hard grounds and the ' yorker ' are all major causes of problems in the toe area of the bat. David came to the conclusion that the toe area needed to be sealed for protection. The fitting of a hard wearing strip of rubber was the answer. The adhesive used seals the wood and the rubber stops the damp from penetrating, therefore avoiding swelling at the toe. A strip fitted to the front provides extra protection from 'yorker' damage by cushioning the blow. This idea was tried out by several local players and it proved to be such a success, that the word spread and cricketers brought new and old bats to have the toe-guard fitted. David contactedGray-Nicholls Cricket Sales with a view to marketing the product. After extensive testing, they agreed the toe-guard was a great idea and should be fitted to all cricket bats.
